In apolymer matrix it enhances the mechanical properties of the composites e.g.polyolefins, polyamide, polycarbonate, elastomers, etc.

 

Itsparticles exhibit high surface activity, which determines their activemodification function in composite materials. Specific polymer structuralinteractions are based on the special character of the surface of itsparticles.

 

Alterin110™ is an aluminosilicate material with a specific structure, characterized bythree systems of channels in the particle volume.

Thedimensions of the polymer chain are commensurable with the dimensions of thechannels in the Alterin 110™ particles. Thedimensional relationship influences the process of adsorption of the polymerchain on the Alterin 110 surface channels, and the extent of adsorptiondetermines the strength of connection and adhesion between the polymers andAlterin 110™ particles.


 



Polymericcomposites with Alterin 110™ as the reinforcing filler exhibit the followingadvantages:

COMPOSITEDENSITY

The density of polymeric composites, modified with Alterin 110™ islower than the theoretically predicted values. The explanation for thisunexpected effect lies in the unique structure of the material. Because thepolymer cannot penetrate the pore structure of the Alterin 110™ it is effectivelya ‘micro-bubble’ and its volume displacement of polymer is significantly higherthan conventional fillers.

ALTERIN110™

MULTIFUNCTIONALADDITIVE SYSTEM FOR PLASTICS - WOOD FLOUR COMPOSITES

 

Alterin110™ is a highly efficient inorganic mineral desiccant, with a moistureabsorbing capacity of up to 12% of its dry weight. In plastics-wood flourcomposites it removes trace moisture, and significantlyimproves the nail and screw retention of the composite by providing an internalcellular structure.

 

Duringthe processing of the wood flour - plastics compositions containing Alterin110™ the desorbed nitrogen is exchanged with the moisture from the wood flourwhich is then absorbed in the Alterin 110™ channels because of the extremelyhigh affinity of this aluminosilicate material for water.

 

Alterin110™ has a multifunctional role in the processing of plastics - wood flourcomposites. It acts as a low gas yield physical foaming agent as well as ahighly efficient inorganic mineral desiccant. Alterin 110 also acts as anucleating agent in the composite system.

 

The useof Alterin 110™ may contribute other useful properties to plastics wood flourcomposites, for instance:

 

1.Alterin 110 has a multifunctional stabilization effect when used in polymericcomposites:

2.Alterin 110 can be used as a stabilizer against the harmful effects ofcorrosion of metal surfaces when polymeric compositions are processed throughmechanical equipment such as molds and extruders where the composition normallycontacts metal surfaces

 

3.Alterin 110 may also enhance the mechanical properties of the compositematerial:

4.Alterin 110 is a moderately efficient physical foaming agent

l Ventedextrusion system for removal of volatiles.

 

l Nozzlewith diameter 1.27 mm and length 2.54 mm

 

l Nozzletemperature 140 C ; 150 C ; 160 C


The following SEM micrographs illustrate the positive effect ofAlterin 110 on the cell structure of HDPE wood flour composite. The addition ofAlterin 110 contributes greatly to the uniform fine cell structure of thecomposite.

Alterin 110™ at low levels affects positively the mechanicalproperties of polymer blends. Because of its highly active surface and itsspecific structure with three systems of channels in the particle volume,together with high sorption ability, it can act as a compatibilizer in polymerblends.
